Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His existence was untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his flock of rams.

Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his only associates. Day upon day, watching over his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome scheme.

Narratives of predators hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! check here A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank persisted for a few days more. But, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is tough to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
